Self Reflection

1. This course has changed my views on how design influences humanity in many ways during the semester. The idea that stands out the most is how architecture is influence by the people. It is not just the people who are using the building its the people who live around it that influence the design. A great example is during ancient times the Greeks and Romans used their government building to state the power that the government had over the people. These buildings were massive in size to create that sense of power. The people excepted the idea that governmental buildings should be so large that it was a tradition that is still carried on today in our society. Prior to this course I myself had not made those connections. Its not only the people who inhabit the building but the people who surround it as well.

2. Villa Savoye set the standard of modern design. Le Corbusier took still home and created a movement from which we are still using today. The impact of the movement can be seen from buildings to furniture. Designers take this movement and even apply it to designs from the past helping to keep it alive. This style has created almost every modern building built t
oday. It is the design of the 21 century even though it was created well before the century began. Le Corbusier was a forward thinker and designer who left an lasting impact. This impact is celebrated by so many designers of today. It is one style that will never leave.
3. Revivals are an example of how designers are embracing the past but are still creating something that is innovative for today. The revivals bring back the history of the past. Designers take the ideas of what the revival states the building should be and then create the innovation of whats needed for today. The innovations are what update the creation and make it more modern. Without the ideas of revivals many of the ideas of the past could be left behind. As time progresses we see more and more past ideas coming back to designs. Those ideas are what keep design fresh and innovative.

4. Women's Rights played a huge role in what design is today. These icons of modernism helped to open doors for women to enter in the field of architecture and design. These women and their movements created a place for women to create their own designs. This influence had to create a big change in the way buildings and products appear. Letting women in the design world opened up doors for more designs to be made. Women have their own ideas and influences creating something special. The influence of women's rights is what changed the minds of the dominating men to open up the doors. These women were truly the innovators of the time. Without their influence I may not be in able to enter in design school because I am a woman.

Group Statement

Popped Corn's design for My Sister's House is a coherent design based on the precedents of current womens homes focusing on public and private spaces which are breaking out of the box; the main thread of our decade of the 70s.

Narrative

From the exterior charrette we have taken the concept of pushing and pulling. Each floor has its own pull out and push in. The pushing and pulling gives the building an asymmetrical appearance. This idea allows for the plan and exterior to share the same concept. Each one gaining a sense of cubism. The cubism is a reflection of architect Philip Johnson. As we progress we want to revise the usage of the plan with the pushes and pulls making sure they both are working together cohesively.
